World of Cities Poll

This was an admittedly difficult poll — and it appears that most of you did take it, as we had suggested, without resorting to Google.

Here are the 15 largest urban areas in the world:

  1. Tokyo, 37.8 million
  2. Jakarta, 30.5 million
  3. Delhi, 25.0 million
  4. Manila, 24.1 million
  5. Seoul, 23.5 million
  6. Shanghai, 23.4 million
  7. Karachi, 22.1 million
  8. Beijing, 21.0 million
  9. New York, 20.6 million
  10. Guangzhou, 20.6 million
  11. Sao Paolo, 20.4 million
  12. Mexico City, 20.1 million
  13. Mumbai, 17.7 million
  14. Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, 17.4 million
  15. Moscow, 16.2 million

The world is changing rapidly. In less than 10 years, India will surpass China as the most populous country in the world, and Nigeria will pass the United States as the third largest.
