This is the second in what we hope will be monthly recommendations to our subscribers of books on important global issues. This month’s recommendation is The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict Between the US and Xi Jinping’s China by Kevin Rudd, the 26th Prime Minister of Australia and also that country’s former Foreign Minister. Rudd is an unusual politician, a fluent Mandarin speaker who’s been to China scores of times and knows President Xi personally and who, at age 60 in 2017, enrolled at Oxford University to pursue doctoral studies on Xi’s China.
Of all the major developments on the world scene today, even including the terrible war in Ukraine, it is hard not to conclude that the greatest threat to world peace is a possible war between America and China. China is not a rising world power, as it is so often called. China is a world power with the economic and military clout to challenge and perhaps surpass the United States. We all need to understand more about the country and especially about Xi Jinping who has proven to be a transformational leader of China, and who appears likely to stay on the global scene throughout this decade and even beyond.
Rudd, now the President and CEO of The Asia Society in New York, is an authoritative voice about China. His book is an important and much-needed reminder of the dangers that could lie ahead.
We are pleased to recommend “The Avoidable War”. You can find more information and purchase the book here.
